Donald Trump has ignited a new controversy with Denmark by naming a special envoy for Greenland, the large Arctic island he has expressed interest in acquiring. When asked by the BBC about Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, Trump stated that the US must have Greenland for “national protection” and added, “we have to have it.” He indicated that Landry would “lead the charge” as the special envoy to Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. This decision has upset Copenhagen, prompting them to summon the US ambassador for “an explanation.” The Prime Minister of Greenland emphasized that the island should “decide our own future” and that its “territorial integrity must be respected.” In a message on X, Governor Landry expressed that it was an honor to take on this “volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.” Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has renewed his longstanding interest in Greenland, highlighting its strategic position and mineral resources. He has hinted at the possibility of using force to gain control of the island, a stance that has alarmed Denmark, a NATO ally with historically strong ties to Washington. Trump remarked, “We’ll have to work that out,” insisting that the need for Greenland is based on national security, not minerals. He specifically pointed to Chinese and Russian ships as potential threats in the surrounding waters.
