More than 2,000 employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) are facing delays in their voluntary retirement scheme. These workers, who did not join the new companies formed during the restructuring, have reached out to the Minister of Energy about their retirement situation. In their letter, they explain that after the CEB was restructured as per Extraordinary Gazette No. 2451/11 on August 26, 2024, they applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) because they were not included in the new entities. However, around 2,200 of these employees are currently experiencing major uncertainty about their careers. They point out that there has been no official retirement date set yet. The workers claim that the process has faced ongoing delays due to poor management and possible sabotage. Without a clear timeline, they say it is hard to plan their finances and personal lives. As a result, they have asked the Minister of Energy to step in and officially announce a retirement date for those who applied for the VRS, and to ensure that the process is completed soon.
