Academic activities at six faculties of the University of Peradeniya will fully restart on December 29, according to Vice-Chancellor Professor Terrence Madhujith. Classes were paused due to the effects of Cyclone Ditwah. However, three faculties, including the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and Faculty of Engineering, resumed their classes on December 16 due to ongoing exams, the Vice-Chancellor said. The Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Faculty of Dental Sciences are set to begin classes on December 29. The Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science will start on January 5. Professor Madhujith also mentioned that one building in the Faculty of Management was heavily damaged and is currently unsafe for students. An evaluation of this situation is in progress. For new students in the Faculty of Management who successfully finished the 2024 Advanced Level Examination, classes will begin on February 10 as planned. He added that academic activities for other groups in the Faculty of Management will start in an organized manner. The cyclone caused an estimated Rs. 4 billion in damage to the university from flooding, and this figure has been sent to the Ministry of Higher Education.
