The Governments of Sri Lanka and Italy officially renewed their Bilateral Agreement on the Mutual Recognition of Driving Licenses on October 12 in Rome, Italy. Satya Rodrigo, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Italy, signed the agreement for Sri Lanka, while Maria Tripodi, the Deputy Minister and Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, signed on behalf of Italy, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism. This signing marks the end of negotiations between the Motor Traffic and Transport authorities of both nations to renew the agreement, which had expired in 2021. The Driving License Agreement allows for the conversion of valid driving licenses for individuals with permanent residence in either country. Initially signed in 2011 and renewed in 2016, the agreement has been crucial for many Sri Lankans living and working in Italy. It enables residents who have lived in either country for up to six years to convert their national driving licenses without needing to take theoretical or practical exams. This provision has been highly valued by the large Sri Lankan community in Italy, enhancing their job opportunities and contributions as productive expatriates. The renewed agreement will be valid for five years and will take effect within 60 days after both governments ratify it. An official announcement will follow once it is in force.
