The annual budget for the Galle Municipal Council, led by the National People’s Power (NPP), was rejected today (15) by a majority vote. The council has 36 members. In the voting, 17 members supported the budget, while 19 opposed it. The meeting took place this morning, chaired by Mayor Sunil Gamage. The budget was defeated by a margin of two votes. All 17 councilors from the NPP voted in favor, while nine from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), five from the United National Party (UNP), three from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), and two from the People’s Alliance (PA) voted against it. The Galle Municipal Council was formed through a partnership between the NPP and the People’s Alliance. Notably, Deputy Mayor Priyantha Sahabandu, who received support from the SLPP, also voted against the budget.
