Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) has taken Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to task for its failure to take action against an unauthorized funeral parlour on the land allocated for the construction of quarters for the administrator of Borella Kanatte. As per the statement released from COPA, the committee has instructed CMC to conduct a probe and submit a report. COPA has then blamed the representatives who had been present during the recent committee meeting. COPA instructed CMC to take legal action against the wrongdoer and report the progress to the committee. COPA also questioned on action taken with regard to the encroachment into the Ele House land where an unauthorized office is being run. CMC officials have then informed COPA that a meeting will be held with Western Province Governor with regard to the matter. It was revealed at the meeting that CMC has signed an agreement with the other party for occupancy of 40 perches despite the extent of the land being 140 perches. It was revealed that a leasing agreement has been signed in 1992 and the leasing period had ended in 2022. COPA Chairman Kabir Hashim has then advised CMC to work in accordance with the law when dealing with unauthorized structures. Deputy Ministers Aravinda Senarath, Dinidu Saman Hennanayake, Aruna Jayasekera, MPs M. L. A. M. Hisbullah, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, J. C.
