Eight individuals, including the wife of a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police based in Colombo, were arrested yesterday (14) by Anuradhapura Police for allegedly digging for treasure in a rock cave on a property near a temple in the Shravasthipura, Thibirikadawala area. The suspects are men and women aged between 35 and 58, residing in Badulla, Maligathenna, Padavi-Sripura, Giradurukotte, Warakapola and Anuradhapura. They were arrested following information received by the police that they were engaged in treasure hunting on land near the Raththarange Devalaya in Shravasthipura, Thibirikadawala. The arrested woman has been identified as the wife of a DIG serving in the Colombo area. Several tools used for digging, including mammoties, crowbars, and iron rods, were also taken into police custody. The suspects were produced before court yesterday (14) and were remanded until the 26th of this month. Anuradhapura Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
