Experts have raised concerns over a growing number of accidents involving people falling from rambutan trees, raising safety concerns during the fruit-picking season, the Health Promotion Bureau said. Director of the Accidents Ward at the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Indika Jagoda said that around five patients are admitted daily with injuries from such incidents, with several suffering from critical conditions. He said that some individuals install electric wires to fix lights around rambutan tress to protect the fruit from animals, often resulting in accidental injuries. Jagoda warned that after an electric shock, the person should not be moved, turned or made to sit up and safely disconnect the power source and then take the person to the nearest hospital to reduce further harm. Meanwhile, experts urge parents to be cautious as children’s lives have been lost due to choking on rambutan seeds. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution and avoid unsafe practices during the harvesting period.
