LNP – Chemical liquid recommended to detect odour: Experts’ committee

The experts’ committee that examined the domestic gas leak explosions said the supplying companies had been instructed to add Ethyl Mercaptan, a chemical liquid with a distinct odour, for consumers to identify any leak.
A press release issued under the signature of its chairman Prof. Shantha Walpolage said 458 gasrelated incidents had taken place between January 1 and November 28, this year, and 244 of them were complaints related to leaks.
The committee had identified the absence of a chemical substance with an odour for people to identify leaks was a major area of concern.
The press release said the use of outdated and inferior regulators, hoses and hose clips was another matter of concern. The committee said people would be educated in this regard.
The committee is still studying whether the composition of domestic gas has been changed leading to such domestic accidents.
It says steps will be taken to introduce cylinders filled with gas and bearing a special seal.
