LNP – Accidents claim lives similar to terrorism: Ajith Rohana
Approximately 3,000 road accidents take place daily, is similar to people losing lives due to terrorist activities, Police Spokesman and Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Addressing the media at the Information Department Colombo through zoom technology, he said it has been a major issue that road accidents cause damage to life and property daily.
Accordingly, 35,000 to 40,000 accidents are reported to the police annually, he said.
According to the reports by the vehicle insurance institutions, a total number of 500,000 accidents occur annually and accurate number of accidents are not reported to the police.
The highest number of accidents take place due to sheer negligence of motorcyclists and pedestrians. Around 3,650 deaths are reported annually.
According to the latest reports from January 1, 2021 until now, 7,077 people sustained injuries and 1,260 people had died and leaving 3,000 people permanently disabled.
About 8,300,000 vehicles are registered at the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) and the number has become twice the vehicle registration that took place in 2010.
Thank you Mr Rohana for bringing the facts to life. Certainly food for thought.
