The Department of Meteorology has announced that the current rainy weather in the Northern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka is set to continue over the next few days. Today, September 17, showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces. Some areas in the Eastern and Central provinces, as well as the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts, may experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm. After 1:00 p.m., showers or thunderstorms could occur in various parts of the island, with some areas likely to see rainfall of over 75 mm. Additionally, strong winds reaching 40-50 km/h are anticipated at times in the Eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and the districts of Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala. Early morning mist is expected in some parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, along with Galle and Matara districts. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from sudden strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
