Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated Kolkata appearance during the GOAT Tour on Saturday descended into chaos, leaving thousands of fans disappointed at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium). Despite paying ticket prices ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, many spectators claimed they were unable to even catch a proper glimpse of the Argentine superstar. Fans alleged that heavy security arrangements and the presence of special guests positioned close to Messi obstructed views from the stands. Frustration quickly escalated, with angry spectators reportedly throwing chairs and bottles, forcing organisers to rush Messi out of the venue. The situation prompted police action, and Satadru Dutta, the main organiser of the event, was arrested after an FIR was filed. The arrest was confirmed by Jawed Shamim, Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order. Messi arrived at the stadium at around 11:15 a.m. and stayed for approximately 20 minutes. He was expected to complete a full lap of the stadium to greet fans, but this was abandoned due to the worsening situation. What Happened Inside the Stadium Soon after Messi emerged from the tunnel, crowd control broke down. As tensions rose, the event was abruptly cut short. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — all scheduled to be part of the programme — were unable to participate. Promoter Shatadru Dutta and security officials swiftly escorted Messi out of the Salt Lake Stadium to ensure his safety. Meanwhile, several fans reportedly entered the ground and vandalised canopies and other event infrastructure.
