LNP – Dangerous structures at Ratmalana Airport to be removed following Jeju Air tragedy

In response to concerns over the risks posed by fixed structures at the Colombo International Airport, Ratmalana and the recent Jeju Air Flight 2216 tragedy at Muan International Airport, South Korea, which claimed 179 lives, Minister Bimal Ratnayake has directed authorities to remove such structures.

The Aircraft Owners’ and Operators’ Association of Sri Lanka had previously raised alarms, urging the government and the Civil Aviation Authority to address the risks associated with fixed structures at the airport.

The association highlighted the 9-cubic-foot wall along the Galle Road boundary, which it claims violates international airport safety regulations. The association warned that this structure could lead to accidents similar to the recent Muan Airport tragedy and called for the wall’s removal.

They recommended replacing it with a simple fence that could easily break in the event of an accident, reducing the potential danger. Minister Ratnayake responded to the issue while holding discussions with the heads of the Civil Aviation Authority and Airport Services.

He has instructed that the wall be removed following a proper safety inquiry to assess the full extent of the risk.
