The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has approved bail for Mohammed Hilmi, the former Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). He was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) due to an alleged corruption case. Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama made the decision after reviewing medical reports from the Colombo National Hospital, which highlighted exceptional medical conditions. Hilmi was released on two surety bonds worth Rs. 2 million and is now subject to an overseas travel ban. The next court hearing is set for February 17. Hilmi's arrest is linked to accusations of corruption for allegedly pressuring officials to choose a specific organization for training Foreign Employment Bureau officers in January 2024, breaching procurement rules and awarding the contract to that company.
