The Sri Lanka Police have noticed that some people are misusing the ‘119’ emergency hotline. This has led to the need for more public education and action against those who misuse it. Police Media Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler explained that the misuse has continued, even during bad weather, which has forced the Police to consider legal action against those who misuse the hotline. He pointed out that the main goal of the 119 Police Emergency Service is to protect the rights of citizens and respond quickly to emergencies, urgent issues, crimes, and critical information needing immediate police attention. However, there has been a rise in false calls and people using the ‘119’ hotline for non-emergencies, such as questions about water supply, electricity, financial issues, and land disputes. These calls disrupt the emergency service, he cautioned. ASP Wootler also mentioned that the Police have found several phone numbers that repeatedly misuse the hotline and have temporarily blocked those numbers from accessing the ‘119’ service as a precaution. He appealed to the public to stop misusing the ‘119’ hotline, emphasizing that such actions can delay help for those in real emergencies. The public is urged to use the ‘119’ service only for emergencies and urgent police situations, allowing the Sri Lanka Police to assist effectively when needed. Additionally, the Police have provided other hotline numbers for the public to use for non-emergency matters and service-related inquiries.
