Today, Sri Lanka will experience fairly heavy rainfall, with some areas expecting over 75 mm of rain. The Department of Meteorology reports that the ongoing rainy conditions will affect the Northern and Eastern regions due to an easterly wave. Showers are anticipated in the North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces. The Met Department warns that some locations in the Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district, may see significant rainfall exceeding 75 mm. In the Northern and North-western provinces, there may also be several periods of rain. After 1:00 p.m., showers or thundershowers are likely across various parts of the island, with some areas experiencing heavy rain above 50 mm. Additionally, strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph are expected at times in the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, and the districts of Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala. Misty conditions may occur during the early morning in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Western, and Central provinces, along with Galle and Matara districts. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risks posed by sudden strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
