The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Sri Lanka, Sergey Viktorov, visited Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees. They discussed Sri Lanka’s efforts to rebuild and recover after Cyclone Ditwah. The Prime Minister shared the government's priorities, which include repairing essential infrastructure, housing, and supporting agricultural livelihoods. She also mentioned the help from international partners in these recovery efforts. They talked about ways to strengthen the relationship between Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Media Division. Both parties looked for ways to boost economic ties, focusing on attracting investments and increasing tourist visits from Kazakhstan. They also identified education as a key area for collaboration, particularly through student exchange programs and joint research projects. In addition, the new High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka, Isabelle Catherine Martin, also met with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees. The High Commissioner expressed Canada’s sympathy for the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah and affirmed Canada’s commitment to assist Sri Lanka in its recovery. The Prime Minister thanked the international community, including Canada, for their help and noted that Sri Lanka is now in the second phase of recovery after completing rescue and relief operations. She announced that schools would reopen the next day, with most returning to regular activities. The Prime Minister stressed the need to get back to normal and gradually close down relief centers where it is suitable. The High Commissioner highlighted Canada’s commitment to support the agricultural sector, acknowledging its significance for livelihoods and economic stability. In reply, the Prime Minister stated that the government has encouraged farmers to start growing crops again and has already put support measures in place for them.
