The Israeli military reportedly killed Raed Saed, a top commander of Hamas, in a strike on a vehicle in Gaza City on Saturday, according to several Israeli news sources. Saed was said to be one of the planners of the attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023. The strike resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injured at least 25 others, as per Gaza health authorities. There has been no immediate confirmation from Hamas or medical personnel regarding Saed's death. The Israeli military confirmed it targeted a senior Hamas commander in Gaza City but did not reveal his name or provide further details. If confirmed, this would mark the most significant assassination of a senior Hamas leader since a ceasefire began in October. An Israeli defense official stated that Saed was the target, describing him as the head of Hamas’ weapons manufacturing unit. Hamas sources identified him as the second-in-command of the group’s armed wing, following Izz eldeen Al-Hadad. Saed previously led Hamas’ Gaza City battalion, one of the largest and most well-equipped units within the organization. Additionally, the Israeli military reported that two soldiers were hurt by an explosive device that went off during efforts to clear militant infrastructure in the area. It remains unclear if these two events are connected. The conflict in Gaza erupted after Hamas militants killed 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and took 251 hostages during an assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. According to health officials in Gaza, Israel's retaliatory actions have resulted in over 70,700 Palestinian deaths, most of whom are civilians.
