A fire at a retirement home in Manado, located on Indonesia's Sulawesi island, has claimed the lives of 16 individuals, according to a local police official who spoke to the state news agency Antara on Monday. The blaze at the Werdha Damai retirement home was brought under control late on Sunday, and authorities are currently looking into what started the fire, said police official Alamsyah P. Hasibuan. Video from Metro TV captured the flames engulfing the home, illuminating the night sky in orange, as residents tried to assist one elderly person in escaping the burning structure. Jimmy Rotinsulu, the head of the Manado fire department, informed Metro TV that many of the residents, primarily elderly, were trapped inside, and noted that an additional three people sustained burn injuries.
