Motorists caught driving over 120 km/h on expressways will face court proceedings even if fines are paid through the GovPay app, DIG of Traffic and Road Safety, Range Indika Hapugoda said. Speaking during a television programme today, DIG Hapugoda explained that a new Gazette notification has been issued outlining revised penalty rates for violating the maximum speed limit of 100 km/h on expressways. According to the revised fine structure for speeding on expressways, motorists driving between 100 and 120 km/h will be fined Rs. 3,000, while those speeding between 120 and 130 km/h will face a fine of Rs. 5,000. A fine of Rs. 10,000 will be imposed for speeds between 130 and 140 km/h, and Rs. 15,000 for speeds between 140 and 150 km/h. If a vehicle is driven at speeds exceeding 150 km/h, legal action will be initiated through courts. Despite the spot fine system, DIG Hapugoda clarified that court cases will now also be filed for those exceeding 120 km/h, due to the absence of a specific Rs. 3,000 charge sheet provision beyond that threshold. He further revealed that the government has already collected Rs. 5.7 billion in traffic-related fines so far this year, compared to Rs. 4.7 billion earned in 2024.
