LNP – Contaminated coconut oil in the local market: Minister

Contaminated coconut oil which is unsuitable for human consumption has entered the local market, Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe told Parliament today.

“Importers are engaged in getting unrefined coconut oil and selling them in the local market,” the Minister said in response to a question raised by MP Chaminda Wijesiri in the House.

“Some importing companies have ceased to exist in 11 months after earning substantial revenue,” the Minister also revealed.Â

He said Consumer Protection Act will be amended and thus strong rules and regulations will be brought to prevent scams.
