The Special Task Force of Police (STF) arrested two suspects involved in drug trafficking along with a pistol, magazines and over Rs. 14 million in cash during special operations in Talangama and Thelikada.
Police said initially the STF arrested a 32-year old resident of Koskoratuwa, Seenimodara in Tangalle with over Rs. 5 million cash, 377g of gold jewellery.
It was revealed that the drug trafficking is being carried out by multi-day fishing vessels by the suspect who is a navigator of the fishing vessel which is used for smuggling.
Police said the main suspect wanted over drug trafficking fled the area during the raid.
However, during a search conducted at the suspectâs house, the father of the suspect, a 60-year-old man from Gonapinuwala was arrested for aiding and abetting the drug racket.
The STF recovered a foreign made pistol and 2 magazines, over Rs. 9 million in cash suspected to have been earned from drug trafficking racket. The STF took into custody a few satellite phones as well.
The suspects and the seized weapon, gold and money were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
Investigations are underway to arrest the main suspect and others involved in the racket.
