LNP – COVID-19: Death rate to come down once calculations addressed: Ministry

The hiccups and shortcomings that occurred in calculations related to COVID-19 figures are being addressed and rectified and once it is done, the death rate will slow down, Health Promotion Bureau Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa said.

Addressing a news briefing yesterday (16), he said the death rate is normally determined considering the number of active cases and added when the actual figures were received, the death rate would come down.

“We are currently coordinating with district and provincial directors as to see where things have gone wrong in terms of COVID data and then, immediate steps would be taken to rectify the issue,” he underlined.

However, Dr. Batuwanthudawa stressed the point that there was no move either to hide or alter statistics related to COVID-19 infections and mortalities.

The death rate, which was around 1.3 now stands at 6.09 which shows the gravity of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

This is reportedly the world’s fourth highest daily death rate by population ratio.

  • Is it about " reporting" the numbers vs actual death count? So, with the reshuffle and shuffle things around the covid related death reports will suddenly be reduced? Is that what we need to know?
