17 year-old Tharushi Karunaratne of Walala A. The World Junior Athletics Championships, which is for athletes under the age of 20, will take place in Nairobi, Kenya in August this year.

Karunaratne beat the World Junior Athletics Championship qualifying standard of 2:08.70 for the event.
Dilshi Kumarasinghe, the national Womenâs 800m champion, sustained an injury midway through the race and could not complete the event.
Previously, Shanika Lakshani (Holy Cross College Kalutara) had also qualified for the Womenâs 800m at the World Junior Championships, while Isuru Abeywardena (Ananda Sastralaya Matugama) has qualified for the Menâs 400m.
Meanwhile, Nilani Ratnayake won the 3000m Steeplechase event in a time of 9:53.96 secs, but she was short of the Olympic qualifying standard of 9:30.00 secs.
