Kurunegala District United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena yesterday urged the relevant authorities to accelerate the investigations launched into the Central Bank bond issue and punish the culprits without delay.
He was ddressing the media at the UNP Headquarters, Sirikotha, yesterday.
Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) owner Arjun Aloysius and CEO Kasun Palisena were arrested and granted bail before, and now; they have arrested another five, including the father of Arjun Aloysius.
âThe government has ensured the independence of the judiciary and the Police Department is also under President Maithripala Sirisena. Hence, there is no barrier to the investigation,â the MP said.
Commenting on the next Presidential candidate of the UNP, the parliamentarian said that the Presidential candidate of the Joint Opposition has to be announced after a discussion; but as a political party which respects democracy, the UNP will nominate its Presidential candidate at the correct time, as a collective decision of the working committee, parliamentarians, and grassroots-level UNPers.
He added that the Opposition was attempting to take political advantages by arousing issues such as the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) issue and the Wilpattu deforestation issue.
The Wilpattu issue is similar to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) issue, which started during the Rajapaksa regime. Now, the UNP has to be responsible for them, he said.
MP Amarasena said that the unplanned construction of Norochcholai power plant has resulted in the ongoing power crisis.
