UPFA MP Duminda Dissanayake said that the incumbent President should vie for the next Presidential Election from the SLFP.
Dissanayake speaking at an event held at Nochchiyagama yesterday said President Maithripala Sirisena should be the SLFPâs only candidate to vie for the next Presidential Election.
He said the SLFP should select a candidate vying for the Presidential election, only if incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena is not keen to contest for a second term.
âI have no intention of joining the United National Party. We were on the UNP stage to make the country victorious in 2015,â he said.
Dissanayake added that President Maithripala Sirisena should be made President again to continue the programmes initiated by him. âThese programmes that benefit people in all parts of the country should continue unabated,â he said.
He said that other political parties may field their own candidates for the election.âThe SLFP and the SLPP held talks for a broader alliance and the first stage of the talks was successful and the second stage talks will begin soon.
He said his party abstained from voting at the vote on the second reading of the budget. No decision has been taken with regard to the SLFPâs position at the vote on the third reading of the budget, he said.
