The inauguration of Commandantâs Cup Sailing Regatta, organized by the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), was held in the alluring waters off Sandy Bay in the port city of Trincomalee âfrom 27th to 29th September. The opening ceremony was held at the Shanthi Bahar memorial Sailing Club under the auspices of Commandant NMA, Commodore Kalana Jinadasa and Mr. Sarath Kuragama of the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka.
This novelty of experience made way for the prospective officers of the Navy including friendly foreign navies and sister services to enhance their sailing skills at the budding stage of their career. Naval Academies of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan and Military Academy of the Sri Lanka Army along with 7 officer training intakes from the NMA participated in this regatta at picturesque Sandy Bay.
Total of 8 races held over two days to select the winners for the Open and Cup Championships were highly competitive as young blooded officer trainees made the best use of the opportunity to clinch the coveted titles. Accordingly, the Indian Naval Academy won the Open Championship while the Cup Championship was won by the midshipmen of the 59th intake.
The closing ceremony and prize giving were graced by Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, as the Chief Guest. Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe, Director General Training, Rear Admiral Rasika Dissanayake, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet, Rear Admiral Ananda Guruge and a large number of officers and sailors were also present on this occasion.
