The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy says the demand for electricity this year has seen a marked increase.
When inquired by NewsRadio Media Director of the Ministry Sulakshana Jayawardene said the demand has increased by 3.5 percent this year, in contrast to previous years.
Jayawardene said when considering the previous year as 2015, the total demand was around 13,090 GWh while in 2016 the demand was 14,148 GWh.
He noted as of yesterday the demand was 14,650GWh for 2017 adding the demand has been high in comparison to 2016.
Jayawardene stated in comparison to 2016 and regardless of the next few days, the demand has seen a rise of 500 GWh in the grid in 2017.
