One sluice gate of the upper Kotmale dam was opened due to rising water levels caused by the prolonged rains that have plagued the central province.
Engineers of the upper Kotmale project have advised residents downstream of the dam to remain on high alert as a further increase of the water level will automatically cause the remaining sluice gates to open.
Accordingly flash floods may be expected to several areas downstream of the dam.
