The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on Sunday (22) challenged former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to a face to face debate on the new Constitution.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking at a rally in Hambantota, recalled that National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa had challenged the JVP to a debate on the new Constitution.
The JVP is prepared to take up the challenge, Dissanayake said. âHowever, Weerawansa should send his leader, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for that debate. A debate between the JVP leader and Weerawansaâs leader would be a fair one,â he added.
Dissanayake asserted, âDuring the debate, we hope to reveal how people like Weerawansa pretend that they are patriots and work to personal agendas. They manipulate the concept of patriotism and mislead the general public. Actually, we cannot hope for anything other than that from a political refugee like Weerawansa.â
However, if Weerawansa wants to face a debate by himself, the JVP can send someone who is compatible with Weerawansaâs status, Dissanayake said.
