Mahela bemoans Chamara Silva’s ban
Former captain Mahela Jayawardena has bemoaned the two year ban sanctioned by Sri Lanka Cricket on Chamara Silva for his alleged involvement in a first-class game that was deemed to have resulted in unusual scoring rates.
The former captain has come forward to Chamara Silva’s aid by saying, he was one of the most honest guy, he had played the game with. Jayawardena on his official twitter handle said, “How is this fair.. the guy walks away from fixing gets two years. Ones who are involved gets one year?”
Sri Lanka Cricket slapped cricketers Chamara Silva and Manoj Deshapriya with two-year bans from all “cricket-related activities” for their supposed roles in a Tier B first-class match that featured unusual scoring rates.
The ruling comes after a seven-month inquiry into events of the third day of the Panadura Cricket Club vs Kalutara Physical Culture Club match played in January.
The Committee of Inquiry had found that both clubs were guilty of misconduct and not playing to the spirit of the game. Therefore, the Executive Committee of the SLC had unanimously decided to declare the said match and result void and adjust the points table for 2016/17 accordingly. The ExCo also decided to suspend both captains – Chamara Silva and Manoj Deshapriya – from all cricket-related activities including playing, coaching and administration for a period of two years with immediate effect.
