I will never appoint Interim Committees– Dayasiri

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that he will not appoint an interim committee under any circumstance as long as he is the Sports Minister.

The Minister made this remark at the workshop to revamp SL cricket at Water’s Edge yesterday.

Explaining his decision, Minister said that he does not like to appoint an interim committee to the 62 sports which are under the Ministry due to many reasons. He explained that international bodies do not recognize interim committees and SLC had become an observer during some of the ICC meetings during the periods of these interim committees.

“There were many interim committees, in netball there is no audit report since 2011 due to the interim committees being there. In badminton there was no interim committee for the last eight years. In cycling there were no audit reports since 2011 as it was governed by an interim committee,”

said Jayasekara. “So if someone has problems there will be an election and anyone who thinks he is better to govern the sport he can come through an election,” said Jayasekara.

Jayasekara further assured that he will guide SLC to revamp and find solutions to their problems based on the outcome of this session.
Minister further said that the investigation report into SLC, which was ordered during the previous Sports Minister Naveen Dissanayake’s time has been handed over to the FCID and CID.

“There were a few specific problems identified and we have given a solution for those. But it mostly consists of broad areas without directing to specific problems which can be addressed. This session will give us the specific problem and how to address those,” concluded Jayasekara.
