An asylum seeker boat found off Indonesia with dozens on board, including 33 Sri Lankans, bound for Australia or New Zealand is a âreally significant wake-up callâ, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says.
The news comes after the Turnbull government last week confirmedâ¦â¦that a boatload of Chinese men who reached an island in the Torres Strait had been sent back to China. Dutton said Australia hadnât seen âactivity on the waterâ for a long period of time.
âThe Indonesian authorities detected that vessel and those 33 people were coming from Sri Lanka with a destination of Australia or New Zealand and it just goes to show â and all of the intelligence indicates this as well â that the people smugglers are trying to get money out of these innocent men, women and children,â Dutton told the Nine Network.
âIf the chatter here in Australia is that somehow the policyâs going to change or Labourâs going to go weak on this aspect or that aspect, the people smugglers will quickly be back into business.â
Dutton said the boat showed Australia had to remain vigilant.
âWeâve got lots of resources at sea, in the air, detection, stopping vessels before they get away from foreign ports, but the point is that the threat is still there,â he said.
âItâs not gone away and as weâre seeing on the Mediterranean and in Europe at the moment, there are millions of people that would want to come to a country like ours.â
