Rs. 154M drinking water project for Karathota

Minister of City Planning and Water Supply (MCPWS) Rauff Hakeem has initiated a Rs 154 million water supply project for Karathota, a spokesperson from his ministry said.

“45 per cent of the country’s population has access to drinking pipe water facilities. The plan of the MCPWS is to provide drinking water for another 15 per cent within the next two years,” the spokesperson said.

“This project will supply water from the Korathota Devale to Mahawela in Kaduwela- Homagama Road, and Rajasinghe Mawatha and its sub lanes. The length of the water pipe is 7.6 km, and it can provide water to 1,500 families,” he added.

According to the spokesperson, MCPWS is to commence a joint venture with the private sector for the first time in history. All plans are set to commence the first project from Weliwita. This project is capable of purifying 90,000 cubic meters of water.

MCPWS also believes that a procedure should be established to repay the loans taken for these projects..

“It costs Rs 48 to purify 1,000 litres of water, but we only take Rs 12 from the public. It is necessary for the general public to learn the reality behind,” the spokesperson noted.

Minister Hakeem expressed these opinions at the inauguration ceremony of the Karathota water supply project. Minister of Science,

Technology and Research Susil Premajayatha, State Minister of “International Trade” Sujeewa Senasinghe, Secretary to the MCPWS Sarath Chandradnasiri Vithana, Deputy Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board Safiq Rajabdeen, and many other Provincial Council ministers attended the event.
