Telephone conversations on bond deals:

Some recordings erased: AG’s Dept. asks for back-up data

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing alleged bond scams, after resuming its sittings yesterday, ordered Perpetual Treasuries Ltd to submit all back-up data stored in its telephone data base.

Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Milinda Gunatillake requested the Commission that if Perpetual Treasuries failed to provide the required data, permission be granted to get Metropolitan Company engineer responsible for the installation of the Perpetual Treasuries telecommunication system to retrieve back-up data. The Commission acceded to the request.

Commission Chairman Justice K. T. Chitrasiri ordered that Information Technology Officer of Perpetual Treasuries Sachin Devatrhanthri be informed about the Commission’s decision.

DSG Gunatillake told the Commission that some of the data of recorded telephone conversations of Perpetual Treasuries had been deleted but once the data were furnished the necessary information about the telephone conversations could be obtained within three days.

When the Commission questioned Chief Executive Officer of Perpetual Treasuries Ltd Kasun Palisena on the missing data on telephone conversations of the company, he said he would find it out and inform the commission.

Palisena handed over his laptop computer to the Commission yesterday in keeping with a previous order.

The Commission sittings resume on Monday 28 August.
