Youth dies in police shooting: STF deployed in Jaffna

The Special Task Force (STF) was deployed in Manalkadu in the general area Kudathanai yesterday afternoon to defuse tension following an incident where police shooting caused the death of a 25-year-old youth travelling in truck.

Police and military sources told , last night that the law enforcement officers manning a check point had fired at the vehicle carrying sand when it sped away defying an order to stop.

Subsequently, residents damaged a police vehicle at the scene and a check point situated on the Point Pedro-Kodikamam road.

The military identified the victim as Dinesh from Thunalai, Point Pedro.

The incident took place in the area where the 55 Division troops are deployed.

The truck bearing no 40-8987 had been detained and the body handed over to local hospital, sources said, adding that the victim had returned from overseas recently.
