Tense situation in Muthurajawela over garbage row

A tense situation had prevailed in the Muthurajawela area as protesters attempted to block garbage trucks from dumping garbage in the area.

Police officers had to intervene in order to remove the large number of protesters, comprised of residents in the area, as they attempted to prevent the trucks from entering the site.

Several villagers even proceeded to sleep on the road to block the vehicles from traveling while tensions flared when police attempted to remove them.

Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has also issued a letter denouncing the dumping of garbage collected in the Colombo city in Muthurajawela by the Colombo Municipal Council and other government agencies.

Environmental groups and residents in the area have been demanding that the government halt the dumping of garbage at the location due to environmental concerns.
