SLFP to contest polls under UPFA banner
Ten committees to strengthen party apparatus
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will contest the forthcoming elections including the Local Government Election under the United People Freedom Alliance banner as an alliance with other political parties, Public Enterprise Development State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said. The Minister addressing the media yesterday at the SLFP headquarters said this decision was taken at the SLFP Parliamentarians’ meeting held recently under the chairmanship of President Maithripala Sirisena.
At the discussion, it has been decided to appoint 10 committees to strengthen the party further to face the elections successfully.
“Within the next few months, the party will be subject to radical changes to strengthen the SLFP to face the forthcoming elections,” he said.
Accordingly, the Party reorganising committee, Law assistance committee, Coordinating Committee, Finance Committee, Election Committee, Election Propaganda Committee, Communication Committee, Policy Declaration Committee, Election Monitoring Committee have been appointed. Besides, ministers and parliamentarians have been appointed for each district to carry out coordination, the Minister said.
Policy decisions of the country’s economy will be taken mainly by the National Economic Council appointed by the President. The SLFP and the UNP have come to a common stand to strengthen country’s economy through empowering local economy and safeguarding local industries, he said. Another committee was appointed under the chairmanship of Minister Susil Premajayantha to commemorate the Bandaranaike Day, which falls on September 26 at Horagolla.
