LNP – Parliament heats up over Hulftsdorp shooting

Opposition MPs raised concerns over the shooting incident in the Hulftsdorp Court complex this morning, claiming that murders have escalated in the country putting peoples’ lives at risk.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament that it is a serious situation if an individual’s life is at risk even inside the court.

Premadasa said killings take place daily and stressed the need to have an immediate solution to resolve the issue.

He said the government must take stern action to ensure law and order in the country and that the Opposition is ready to support the government in taking action over the matter.

Chief Government Whip Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the government has taken the underworld activities seriously and that the government will implement the law against underworld activities.

He said the Defence Ministry declared an amnesty period to hand over weapons and that most of the people had handed over their weapons to the Defence Ministry.

The Minister said investigations have been launched into the escalation of underworld activities and that the government has intervened to bring down underworld criminals from Dubai and India.

SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said some 78 people have been killed during the last few days and that killing has become a common occurrence now.

Minister Jayatissa said police, STF and intelligence services have been deployed to ensure security in the country.
