LNP – Green chili as high as Rs. 1800 per kilo

In a fresh blow to household budgets, the price of green chili has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels, reaching as high as Rs. 1780 to Rs. 1800 per kilogram.

The sudden surge in prices has left many consumers struggling to cope with the growing cost of essential food items.

According to the Narahenpita Economic Centre, the wholesale price of green chili has surged to Rs. 1,780 per kilogram, while the price in local markets has hit Rs. 1,800.

The sharp price hike is putting additional pressure on household budgets, making green chili, a key ingredient in Sri Lankan cuisine, an unaffordable luxury for many families.

Experts attribute the price increase to a combination of adverse weather conditions, reduced harvests, and rising transportation costs. 

Meanwhile, the wholesale price of coconut has dropped to Rs. 130 to Rs. 150, while the price in the local market ranges from Rs. 140 to Rs. 160, according to the Narahenpita Economic Centre.
