LNP – Prevailing curbs cannot be lifted: Health Ministry
The existing COVID-19 restrictions can neither be lifted nor relaxed in the near future, given the Omicron situation in the country, the Health Ministry stressed.
Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told media today that the current COVID situation does not facilitate them to lift the prevailing restrictions.
“Several Western countries have already scrapped COVID-19 restrictions. However, it is visible that the number of cases has significantly increased in these countries after lifting the curbs,” he underscored.
“As far as the COVID situation in Sri Lanka is concerned, it is not extremely alarming; however, it does not mean that restrictions can be eased. We need some time to review it and take steps accordingly,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Herath said they were concerned about the number of COVID-19 related deaths as there is a marginal rise when compared to the number of cases.
“The number of deaths was at a lower level a couple of weeks ago. However, it has gone slightly up during the last seven days, which ranges from 20 to 30,” he pointed out.
Denmark has become the first EU country to scrap all COVID-19 restrictions while UK has also decided to scrap the remaining COVID-19 curbs
