UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that Minister Maithreepala Sirisena, the SLFP General Secretary, should go to Geneva and lodge a complaint with the UN Human Rights Council about violations of his rights. Minister Maithreepala Sirisena says he has been attacked in the media and that his life is under threat, the UNP Chief said. He implies that there are sinister forces within the Government intent on doing him harm. If what he says is true, then that s a clear violation of human rights.
Mr. Wickremesinghe made these comments on Friday during a promotion campaign to boost UNP membership in the Kandy district. The UNP Leader said that Minister Sirisena was one of his rivals in politics, but he would never wish harm to Minister Sirisena. Referring to the recent brawl involving the Minister s son and the son of a Deputy Inspector of General of Police, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the Police did not have the authority to decide whether a person should be produced in court or kept in custody.
If the Police can decide what is to be done with a suspect, why was the girl who stole eight coconuts produced in court and fined Rs. 50,000 rupees? he asked. Mr. Wickremesinghe said that when a child is asked to contribute Rs. 800 towards colour-washing the school, it is a clear sign that free education system in this country is on the decline. When I was Minister of Education, I made sure schools were allocated funds for their upkeep, he said.
The UNP leader said the Government was drafting plans that would cripple the county s judiciary and free education system. He cited the Advanced Level Z score case and the impeachment of the Chief Justice. This is why we say the Rajapaksa regime should be overthrown. We demand an election in 2014, he said.
